Sri Lanka is preparing to celebrate Deepavali 🪔, one of the most colourful and significant Hindu festivals, tomorrow, November 8, 2026.

Also known as Diwali, the Festival of Lights symbolises the victory of good over evil, light over darkness and hope over despair.

The festival holds special cultural and religious significance for Hindus, with families celebrating the occasion through traditional rituals, prayers and joyful gatherings.

Why Is Deepavali Celebrated?

Deepavali is traditionally associated with the return of Lord Rama to Ayodhya after 14 years of exile and his victory over the demon king Ravana.

According to the Hindu epic Ramayana, people welcomed Lord Rama by lighting rows of oil lamps, symbolising the triumph of good over evil. This tradition continues to be an important part of Deepavali celebrations.

How Will Families Celebrate the Festival?

The celebrations begin with families cleaning and decorating their homes ahead of the festival.

On Deepavali morning, devotees traditionally take an early oil bath, wear new clothes and visit temples to offer prayers.

Homes are decorated with colourful kolams, flowers and traditional oil lamps, while families prepare delicious sweets and special meals to share with relatives and friends.

Lighting Lamps and Sharing Happiness

One of the most beautiful traditions of Deepavali is lighting oil lamps, known as diyas.

These lamps are placed at entrances, windows and around homes, creating a warm and festive atmosphere.

Children and adults also enjoy fireworks, exchange gifts and sweets, and spend quality time with loved ones.

A Festival That Brings Families Together

Beyond its religious significance, Deepavali represents unity, kindness, generosity and new beginnings.

As families prepare to welcome the festival tomorrow, the celebration once again offers an opportunity to spread happiness, strengthen relationships and share the message that light will always overcome darkness.

Wishing everyone a Happy and Blessed Deepavali 2026! 🪔
