Sri Lanka bans single-use plastic water bottles in state institutions
Sri Lanka has banned the purchase and use of single-use plastic water bottles in all state institutions with immediate effect, under a new government directive aimed at reducing plastic waste.
The Ministry of Public Administration, Provincial Councils and Local Government issued a special circular ordering government agencies to stop buying and using disposable plastic water bottles from today.
The circular also instructs heads of institutions to take immediate steps to prevent the use of single-use plastics within state organisations.
The move is part of the government’s efforts to promote environmentally sustainable practices and reduce the environmental impact of plastic waste.
State institutions are expected to adopt reusable alternatives in line with the new policy.
