President to meet representatives of Chief Prelates to discuss issues outlined in letter to prisons chief
A discussion between President Anura Kumara Dissanayake and a group of Buddhist monks representing the Chief Prelates of the three Buddhist Nikayas, is scheduled to be held today (08).
The meeting is scheduled to be held at 1.00 pm today, at the Presidential Secretariat to discuss the issues outlined in the letter that the Chief Prelates had sent yesterday (07) to the Commissioner General of Prisons regarding the decision to produce Ven. Galagoda Aththe Gnanasara Thero, who is currently serving a prison sentence, before the court in prison attire.
In a letter addressed to the Commissioner General of Prisons, the Chief Incumbents yesterday expressed their displeasure over the decision to produce Ven. Galagoda Aththe Gnanasara Thero, before the court in prison attire.
The Chief Incumbents stated that requiring the monk to appear before court in prison clothes was improper, emphasizing that the authority to disrobe a Buddhist monk solely rests with the relevant Sangha Sabha.
They further requested that Ven. Galagoda Aththe Gnanasara Thero be permitted to appear before court wearing his monastic robes.
