Sri Lanka cuts power to nearly 100 areas to prevent major blackout
Power and Energy Minister Anura Karunathilaka says electricity supply has been disconnected in nearly 100 areas, including parts of Colombo, due to an imbalance in the national power grid.
The Minister said the measure was taken to maintain the stability of the system, after electricity supply exceeded demand due to higher-than-expected solar power generation.
He said recent rainy weather had led authorities to expect lower solar generation today, but strong sunlight resulted in a large amount of rooftop solar power being added to the national grid.
According to the Minister, the issue has mainly affected the Western Province, where a large number of rooftop solar systems are installed, including areas such as Kalutara and Panadura.
He said the power interruptions were being carried out for a short period to prevent the risk of a major blackout.
The Minister said supply is expected to be restored by around 2.00 p.m. to 3.00 p.m. today.
Meanwhile, the National System Operator has requested rooftop solar panel owners to switch off their systems until 3.00 p.m. today, in order to help restore stability to the national grid. (Newswire)
