National TV reports PayPal to launch in Sri Lanka from May 15
Sri Lanka’s national television network, Sri Lanka Rupavahini Corporation, has reported that PayPal will officially launch services in the country from May 15, although no formal announcement has yet been made by the company or local authorities.
Sources familiar with the matter confirmed to NewsWire that PayPal officials visited Sri Lanka last month for discussions with local stakeholders regarding the rollout of services.
The reported move has generated significant attention among freelancers, digital entrepreneurs, and online businesses in Sri Lanka, many of whom have long called for full PayPal access in the country.
While Sri Lankans have been able to make payments through PayPal for years, receiving international payments directly into local accounts has remained restricted.
SLRC reported that the service is expected to begin from May 15, but officials have yet to publicly confirm the timeline or provide details on the scope of operations.
There has been no official statement so far from PayPal, the Central Bank of Sri Lanka, or the Government regarding the reported launch.
