Rare “Blood Moon” lunar eclipse tonight

A total lunar eclipse will be visible in Sri Lanka tonight (7) and early tomorrow morning (8), creating a rare “Blood Moon” spectacle.

According to Professor Chandana Jayaratne, head of the Department of Astronomy and Space Science at the University of Colombo, the eclipse will begin at 8:58 p.m. and last until 2:25 a.m., with totality—the phase when the Moon turns deep red—occurring from 11:01 p.m. to 12:22 a.m.

The eclipse will also be visible to much of the world, including Asia, central and eastern Africa, and Australia, while parts of Europe, Africa, Australia, and Brazil will witness a partial eclipse.

This rare event will allow Sri Lankans to see the Moon completely covered by Earth’s shadow, a phenomenon that will not occur again in the country until 2028.
